Geography of Austria

Austria is mainly mountainous. It is located in the Alps and is home to part of the Central Eastern Alps, Northern Limestone Alps and Southern Limestone Alps.

The highest mountains in Austria are Grossglockner, Wildspitze, Weisskugel, Grossvenediger, Similaun and Grosses Wiesbachhorn.

The skiing season in Austria is from around November to April.

Austria has an Alpine climate which is not always predictable. The weather can vary depending on the elevation. However, the snowfall in winter is very reliable. In the autumn and spring months a warm, dry wind called the Foehn can blow throug the Alps and valleys which can trigger avalanches.
